ACQG members participate in many community projects.  They have contributed quilts to St. Mary’s Children’s Home Auxiliary,  Project Linus, The Child Advocacy Center, Victory Health Clinic and The Methodist Children’s Home to name a few.  Members have provided educational programs for schools, museums, garden clubs, church groups and historic homes tours.  In our application to Hands On South Alabama for the Heart of Gold Award for Outstanding Service to the Community we estimated that over 5,678 hours a year are spent working on these projects:

Donation Quilts

Over 100 quilts are provided each year to children in need, distributed to Women’s & Children’s Hospital and Social Service Centers through Linus Project and to the Child Advocacy Center – anywhere a child might need a warm hug or comfort.  The blocks put into these small quilts are worked on at home or at scheduled workshops.  Everyone in the Guild helps in some way – supplying materials, piecing, quilting and binding the quilts.

Quilts of Valor

Quilts of Valor are hand-made quilts given to our Veterans to honor and thank them for their service and to provide the comfort that only a quilt can give. The quilts are a labor of love.  We have presented over 100 quilts on a yearly basis.  Donations of patriotic material (100% cotton), batting and wide backing material are appreciated. Monetary donations are also appreciated.  QOV’s can be requested at http://QOV.com and Veterans are not charged for the quilts.

Pet Pillows Project

Initiated by former member Sandra Black, is saving batting and fabric scraps to put into pillowcases, sewn, shut and put into another pillowcase, which can be removed for cleaning.  Each month the Pet Pillows are distributed to one of these facilities: Mobile County Animal Shelter, City of Mobile Humane Shelter, Mobile SPCA, Azalea City Cat Coalition or PURR.  The pillows are a comfort for the pets, and it helps keep our sewing rooms clean!
